Seriously though, I worked for a company once in a job I absolutely loved. The best bunch of people you could ever hope to work with. I decided it was my 'job for life'.

They called an all-staff meeting one day (20th November 2000, as it goes) in which they proceeded to tell us we were closing down and we were all to be made redundant. When we eventually trudged back to our desks in shock, my radio was playing 'Don't Give Up' by Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush.

And what was the line that was playing?

" For every job so many men, so many men no-one needs."

Yes, I shed a tear when I heard that.

"Christmas Shoes" by NewSong

"When She Loved Me" by Randy Newman, sung by Sarah McLachlan

"Angel Down" by Fairchild

"Angel Down" is the most moving of all to me because I met Connie Fairchild and her husband David Torretta when I lived in St. Louis and I know the story behind it. They had a son named Sam who was born with severe birth defects and was never able to walk or talk. He died at an early age, about 4 years old I think. When Connie was interviewed by a local reporter after his death, she said, "He was an angel." I get a lump in my throat every time I hear her sing the words, "You sang a perfect song, never making a sound", because I know exactly what it's about.

The amazing thing is that through all that adversity, they never lost their faith or gave in to self-pity. The song is a heavily gospel-influenced song of hope and faith that they'll someday be reunited in Heaven. That's even more touching than despair or self-pity would have been.
